Sprout Film Festival

People with developmental disabilities, remain marginalized in film and television. The Sprout Film Festival is an International touring festival that raises their profile by showcasing films that feature their work. By presenting thought provoking films, the festival reinforces accurate portrayals of people with developmental disabilities, and exposes the audience to important issues. People can expect an enjoyable and enlightening experience that will entertain, and break down stereotypes promoting a greater acceptance of differences and awareness of similarities. www.gosprout.org.

Proceeds from the event benefit Full Access Brokerage (FAB), a local non-profit that assists individuals with developmental disabilities pursue a quality of life consistent with their preferences and choices. www.fullaccess.org.

Matinee: 11:30am                                                                                       Street Anthem (3 mins.) ~ USA: Hip Hop artist LAZ D performs his inspirational music against the backdrop of crime scenes, parking garages, and the streets of downtown Portland,Oregon.                                                               Dream Lover (25 mins.) ~ USA: Seth, a shy man with developmental disabilities, lives in a group home with Linda, a woman he loves from afar. Today is Linda's last day living in the group home. Will Seth come out of his dream world and declare his love to her?                                                                                        The Lifetime of Elvis Presley (3 mins.) ~ Scotland: This animation was one of seven made on the theme of Elvis Presley that became part of a multimedia event linking video with live music and performance. The animation was created by artists with autistic spectrum disorders as part of Project Ability and is an account of Elvis's life, from childbirth to his untimely death.  Hands Away (3 mins.) ~ Germany: People often express joy through movements. The clip does not only represent the visualization of the song Hands Away but is at the same time a study of the way young people with various disabilities dance.                                                                   The Gillian Film (44 mins.) ~ USA: A moving portrait of an exceptional young woman, who works at a local veterinary clinic, rides horses, takes dance classes, and is developmentally disabled. When Gillian decides to move out of the house, her mother must come to terms with letting go.

Evening: 7:00pm                                                                                     Father’s Voices (14 mins.) ~ USA: Four fathers of young children with a disability provide a glimpse into their lives and emotions                                                                         Siblings (10 mins.) ~ Canada: A touching look inside the world of those who have grown up with a mentally challenged sibling and how this relationship has had a profound effect on their lives.                                                                             Sven-G-Englar (9 mins.) ~ Iceland: This unforgettable and award-winning video, conceived by and supervised by the musical group, Sigur Ros, features the Perlan special-needs theatre group acting out a simple but beautiful play about the elements.                                                                               Lest We Forget: Silent Voices (43 mins.) ~ USA: Chronicles the first person histories of people who lived in Ohio state institutions during the last years of institutionalization and the long journey home that is continuing today. While based in Ohio, the stories have national historical significance as a civil rights movement.                                                              Dreams (4 mins.) ~ USA: This fun, inspirational short video presents children and adults with Down syndrome, talking about their dreams and triumphs
